Day Twenty Two: Where's the Pool?

If you search on Google Maps for a pool in Broadus, MT - you won't find one, despite the fact that it exists and it's not new. In fact, there are several businesses that either don't have a presence on Google Maps nor do they seem to have a website. In fact, when I was trying to dig online to see if they had any town events I could attend, I came across a recent event put on by the library to help people build websites using godaddy. The only way to know about Broadus is to be here.

The town as a whole seems to be outdated, and that isn't necessarily a bad thing. I recently came across a CD set while exploring here that was titled "Learn the Internet". It was not a DVD. Besides the fact that the internet seems to be a new thing here, businesses are closed on Sundays - some on Saturdays as well. How long ago was it that this was true in most places? To think Chick-fil-A has received a bad rap for not being open on Sundays when out here it seems like a lot of the town treats Sundays differently. For me, it's freeing to think of a world where you just can't on a Sunday. Maybe that means family and community are put as a priority or maybe just built in time to recharge. Perhaps people aren't run into the ground having to work potentially 7 days a week, it's a built in boundary. I so often find that jobs become our life, when we aren't working we are tired from working. I wonder if places like this appreciate the work life balance more. The whole culture has to be different in order to plan ahead to know what you need so you don't get caught without it on a Sunday. There is also a level of acceptance and not frustration that the restaurant or store being closed is just the way it is. I love that. I love how free it allows you to be.

When I called to make the reservation for the motel here (you guessed it, there was no online booking option), I asked if they had wifi. The man said "oh yes, we just added a really neat wifi through all of our buildings". Honestly, I wasn't sure if he was kidding or not. That's Broadus for you.
