Today I move from Broadus, MT to Sundance, WY. Wyoming is my 45th state that I will now have been to. I have 2 more states that I intend to visit on this trip, bringing my total to 47. I am very excited about this fact. How lucky I have been to be able to do the travel that I have done. It does not come without it's challenges.
Today, I hit my second bird - second in a week! Alex hit one while driving earlier on this trip - so that makes a whopping 3 for this trip alone. Something must be wrong with the birds here. I think in all of my driving at home and in all of the traveling I have done - I don't think I have ever hit a bird. Is there some weather phenomena that keeps them flying lower or perhaps something that blinds them from seeing our white SUV?! Perhaps it is the type of bird out here - little dare devils seeing how close they can get to nearby whizzing cars? I wish I could say it was because of the higher speed limits out here (sometimes as high as 80 MPH!), but today's was during a cool 65 mph. Poor birds. Maybe they were fine - they did all continue to fly (I think), so that's good. Still, it must have hurt though.
Much like my mishap while grabbing something out of the car this morning. I didn't stand far enough away apparently so when I went to close the door - I slammed the corner into my left thigh. It still hurts hours later and I am sure I will have a gruesome bruise because of it.
While we are on the subject of realities of traveling - let's talk about bug bites. Since the fiasco in Williston - the bugs have settled to occasional nuisances instead of the starting of a plague. However, they made a resurgence in Broadus and now I have at least 15 visible red bites on my legs (oddly, not on any other part). One was accompanied by a black and blue mark which was the size of a quarter. That was a fun and worrisome surprise. I had to do some research but I found out that I'm fine unless I have other symptoms - closing the car door on my leg is not one of them.
So here I am Sundance: sore thigh with impending bruise on one leg, mammoth bug bite with black and blue mark on the other. Everyone should travel!
