On my drive home this afternoon from visiting parts of South Dakota (Rapid City, Sturgis and Deadwood), I saw a gathering of people on the grass of the median between I-90 westbound and I-90 eastbound. Slowing down, I noticed a toppled motorcycle by the side of my car window, a large distance from where they gathered. It was then I realized, they were surrounding a prone human. As I made my way by this scene, I was overcome with grief as I tried to process what may have happened.
I will never learn what happened to cause this scene, or even what happened to this person. It saddens me to think of the life this person was leading and how it may change now. Will they ever walk again? Will they ever ride again? Could this have been avoided or is the fall the reality of a quick swerve to avoid something else - a wild animal, one of those low flying birds?
I've never seen a one person motorcycle accident before let alone a motorcycle accident at all. This experience and scene will stay in my memory for a long time. I pray for this driver and their loved ones.
I do know this experience affirms the song that has been in my heart on repeat: life is short. Anything can happen and it can all change in an instant. I hope we all live lives that we are proud of so when change happens to us - we don't have any regrets.
