Day Twenty Eight: Back to the Basics

Today was day one of trying to live out of a hotel room without a fridge. It didn't have a microwave either - but I asked the manager at the front desk if I could get one and he obliged. I purchased my supplies at the grocery store, mainly fresh fruit. I already had stocked up on canned goods previously. I planned to tap into my collection of oatmeal packets that I had liberated from prior hotels that had included breakfast. I was excited to get creative on meals, kind of like a Macgyver situation.

Sure, I could just go out for lunch or dinner, but again, I'm trying not to treat this like a vacation. I'm trying to keep my daily spending down and live life like I do at home. Also, going out to eat daily could get unhealthy very fast.

As I proudly made my microwave oatmeal for breakfast and prepared myself for the day, it became abundantly clear that the microwave did not work. What I thought was a nice gesture by the manager, ended up being a big disillusion. So, back to the basics I went. Cold oatmeal isn't so bad.

This place as a whole leaves something to be desired. Not only do I not have a microwave nor a fridge, but the wifi does not reach my room. The wifi is great in the lobby and by the elevator on the second floor - but when you make it down the corridor to my room (second from the end), it loses signal. Oftentimes, it doesn't even show up as an available wifi network, other times it does show up, but this is a mirage as it will lose signal within seconds to minutes of connecting.

Is now a good time to mention, I also don't have cell service?

To be honest, losing cell phone reception isn't new. Oftentimes, I haven't had service on my drives. Some of the towns are so small, I haven't had service there either. I just wait until I'm back at the hotel and on wifi to speak with Alex, other friends or do work. I don't mind this as much because my car has a built in GPS and my goal isn't to be on my phone, but to be present and really try to live wherever I am. Lucky for me, the plan for being in Chadron was to explore the surrounding area and not to work from the hotel like many other places.
