I have been loving my walks in this town, especially the evening walks as dusk is setting in. The air is still warm but for me, it's an enjoyable temperature. I see very few people out, but this has been true most places I have been. Maybe that contributes to why I feel incredibly safe here. Also, I see minimal rundown buildings and little to no graffiti. I'm not sure I have seen any homeless in my wanderings. Perhaps I have just missed places they are or maybe some of this is due to the upcoming "Frontier Days" which seems to be a week long fair of sorts that has been advertised all over the town.
Other noteworthy observations about Cheyenne: free parking downtown. I love that they aren't trying to nickel and dime everyone like it seems like so many other cities do. And it's a state capital!
The city is also covered in artwork: from their city wide painted boots (that can be found at parks, outside of businesses, all over the city, etc.) to their murals down alleyways to sculptures on street corners honoring different populations. Several houses have unique designs on their siding or bright and colorful paint jobs exuding personality. Perhaps easily missed are subtle carvings done into stone walkways.
I have also been amazed by the sunsets here. I kid you not when I say the whole sky is lit with colors found in sherbet: oranges, pinks and purples. This is the first time I have noticed the sky, the whole sky saturated in color like this. 360* of beauty as the sun does it's swan song. I'm not sure if the sunsets truly are different here, reflecting off of something (the mountains to the west?) or if this is the first time I have really been able to see all around me. I wish I could capture these moments to share, but the camera never fully absorbs the beauty. I wonder how many people get into car accidents here because of people marveling at the sky.
Cheyenne has not been a disappointment. At only an hour and a half north of Denver - I strongly suggest to anyone to make a trip.
