Day Sixty: Rhythm of the Night

After the winery yesterday and then also today, I spent time exploring Coeur D'Alene. The name itself is intriguing and exotic. We don't have many French cities in the US that are not named after someone. It actually means Heart of an Awl (I wish I could say my 180 day streak of learning French on Duolingo is paying off, but I looked it up). The Coeur D'Alene tribe were apparently shrewd tradespeople getting the nickname for their direct approach.

Coeur D'Alene is located on Coeur D'Alene Lake, a rather small lake in comparison with Flathead Lake or some others I have seen on the trip. Similar to Flathead, this lake is surrounded by pine trees. The town is far more modern and manicured than places I have seen along the way, a sign of the affluence in the area. Adorable shops and homes are walking distance from the beaches, walking trails and shorelines of the lake. The city does not lack things to do, lots of live music, shows and even the Northern Idaho State Fair!

I saw online that the local library was hosting an evening on their lawn with "Coeurimba", a group of locals that play Marimba music. I'm not even sure I knew what Marimba was, so I was excited to attend. The group was made up of teachers who started the group years ago. Though they were all women, I'm not sure that was intentional as they never mentioned being specifically "all-female". The music was funky and softly lullaby-ic. As I sat on the lawn eating my cherries, I thought about the rhythm and talent that these women possess in order to play percussion music, and as a hobby too! I wonder if my teachers had any interesting talents or side gigs I would have been surprised to learn about.
