Day Seventy Two: Not in Kansas Anymore

Still giddy from our rather odd bear encounter yesterday, we were excited to re-enter Yellowstone to see what today would bring. Almost immediately upon entering at 7:45am, we came across a bull elk - catching him chomping away on some breakfast not far from the road. Minutes later, we were driving parallel to a bald eagle, soaring just feet above car height. It was a fantastic morning and we hadn't even gotten out of our car yet!

Our final day in Yellowstone was spent seeing (and reseeing) some classic Yellowstone offerings: mudpots (heated thermal mud puddles), geysers and hot springs. Though we had seen Old Faithful on our first day, we knew we had to check out the marvel once more, this time checking out surrounding geysers as well. The highlight of the day for me was seeing the Grand Prismatic from an overlook. Though we had walked near it on boardwalks on our first day, one cannot see much from that angle and a viewing point from above really should not be missed. The amazing colors of the spring are soothing and mystifying and are almost completely missed from the boardwalk below.

All in all, our time in Yellowstone can be summed up by traffic, long drives, wildlife and uniquely interesting earth features. Yellowstone is such a staple of the US, it would be hard to not see its offerings at least once. In fact, It seemed like every place that I visited in Wyoming, people asked "are you going to Yellowstone?" However, due to this, the traffic and lines make it hard to enjoy this beautiful place at times.
